Emancipation Day, a time to reflect on working-class struggles

Denny was at the time joined by Pan Africanist Wayne “Onkphra” Wells on location at Art Form in Pelican Village yesterday, for a press conference which was convened by the CMPI, the Pan African Coalition of Organisations and the Israel Lovell Foundation, to discuss the celebration for the upcoming Emancipation Day.

Israel Lovell remembered

The Israel Lovell Foundation and the Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration paid respects to the Hon Israel Lovell.


The associations, along with the family of Israel Lovell laying a wreath in his honor, reflected on his contributions to Barbados and those of the Hon Clement Payne and the Revolutionaries of the July 26, 1937 Rebellion in Barbados.

Pan Africanist repeats call for Israel Lovell and Nanny Grigg to be honoured

Pointing out that Lovell argued fervently against race and class discrimination that eventually led up to the riots, Lovell said: “I believe that Israel Lovell should be made a National Hero because Israel Lovell played a leading role during the 1930s period, he helped to create the conditions for the labour movement for political parties, and then he ended up suffering for his contributions.
